2016 Individual Awards Announcements
We are proud to announce this seasons individual awards.
Art Ross Trophy – most points & Rocket Richard Trophy – most goals
Rob McKean from the NY Islanders is this seasons Art Ross winner with his 2nd and back to back Art Ross trophies. Rob finished the season with 60 points breaking a 15 year record of 58 points. Rob also wins his 3rd Rocket Richard trophy for most goals with 34 just missing the record of 36 goals in one season. Rob scored almost 33% of the total Islander goals this season and basically lead the scoring race from the opening night right through the regular season. Flyers Diluzio was 2nd with 41 points. Awesome job Mr. McKean!
Vezina Trophy – best goals against average, best goalie
Bobby Ide of the Islanders wins this seasons Vezina with a league best 3.95 GA Average. It looked like a lock for Flyers McCallum with just 2 weeks to go and a pretty good lead in this category but Bobby finished his last 2 games with only 3 goals against and the Flyers allowed 17 goals that also helped secure the Islanders as our top seed going into the playoffs. Bobby, our oldest backstop, has now won 8 career Vezina trophies, his first in the 1992-1993 season. How old is Bobby????? Congratulations Bobby on a great season.
Hart Trophy – regular season most valuable player
This seasons MVP goes to Flyers defenseman Dan Barrett. Dan finished the season with 18 points but not one who usually thrives on individual stats but more about just getting the team victory. With out Dan the Flyers had their struggles and with him he at most times could control the game especially in his own end. 2nd year member in the league and a true gentlemen and class act and obviously a great hockey player. Dan won the Calder trophy last year and is honoured this year as our leagues Most Valuable Player as he was a unanimous choice, well done vino man!!!!!
Calder Trophy – Best rookie
OK once the rookie initiation was completed this newest member truly stood out with his effortless skating and leadership on the blue line. This years Calder goes to Edmonton Oilers Ian Chamberlain. The year of the blue liners thats for sure. Ian helped turn the Oilers slow start in the front half to one of our hottest teams in the league going into the playoffs. Ian led all rookie scoring with 22 points and only one minor penalty. The kid sure can skate and never looks like he is breaking a sweat. Great vision on the ice and most likely some future Norris trophies will be added to his closet. Well done Ian!
Norris Trophy – best defenseman
So many excellent choices this campaign but after all ballots were submitted by the media our winner goes to Islanders Moe Connell. Moe had an outstanding season at both ends of the pond. He led all defensemen in scoring with 28 points, 10th best in all the league. Moe now a veteran has won the Conn Smythe award 3 times and really is known as a true leader come to the meaningful time in our schedule. Only one minor penalty this season, maybe something happened between him and Brenda???? Moe has played both forward and defense during his illustrious career but has settled back on the blue line the last few years and has truly excelled in the role and is honoured as this seasons Norris winner, well done Moe.
Selke Award – most improved player
This one was also very tough as we had many members show double digit improvements on the stats pages and general improvements on the ice. This year the award will be shared by 2 players the media felt improved the most and helped their squads. Boston Bruins Robin Flumerfelt and Montreal Canadians Patrick Sharp are honoured as this seasons Selke winners. Bruins Flumerfelt finished the campaign as their leading scorer with a 30 point season, 7th best in the league and an +11 point improvement from the previous season. 18 goals is a career high for Robin and like the picture below I think most were scored right there like Phil Esposito. Also would like to note only 8 minutes with Brenda this season, maybe playing with Tony Thomas last year helped Robin, mmmmmm. Robin has quietly tried to be traded to the Habs all season long with out success. I think the Habs could have used him but they also had a Selke winner in the young svelte Patrick Sharp. Patty is a pleasure to play with and always has a smile on his face before, during and after every PCOHL game regardless of the score. Patty finished the season with 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points and 4th best on the Habs. Last year, his rookie season, he had 10 points, that is more than double. Now last year he played with Leo and this year he played with Peacock. I think Joe’s pre game conversation made Patty skate much faster this season than last. Well done Patty and well deserved my friend.
So there it is. We will announce our Conn Smythe winner after the finals. On behalf of all of us at PCOHL lets raise a glass to our award winners this season, well deserved by each of you.
Cheers
