2023-2024 PCOHL AWARDS
It’s that time of year once again when the hockey world celebrates its best at the annual PCOHL AWARDS.
2024 Art Ross Trophy – Most Regular Season Points
This year’s Art Ross trophy for most points in the regular season was a TIE between Portugal MVP Greg Platt and Slovenia sniper Paul Riopelle, who both ended the season with 46 points! Both of these players got to the top with a mix of goals and assists and were team leaders on and off the ice.
Greg Platt won this trophy 10 years ago before his multi-year contract with the New Brunswick Oldtimer’s Association. Greg also won the Rocket Richard that year and the Calder (Rookie of the year) four years before that. Greg was also last year’s Hart Trophy Winner (regular season MVP). Congratulations Greg on a well-deserved award!
Paul Riopelle is only in his second year but has already begun to accumulate the hardware. Paul was last year’s Rookie of the Year and adds to that with a pair of awards this year. If Slovenia goes all the way, Paul will be a big reason why. Congratulations Paul!
2024 Hart Trophy – Regular Season MVP
Paul Riopelle picks up his second trophy of the year and third trophy of his two year career in the PCOHL with this year’s Hart Trophy. Paul was a big reason for Slovenia’s late season streak that put them into second place and has already made big contributions to their playoff campaign. Congratulations Paul on your award!
2024 Vezina Trophy – Best Goalie
This year’s Vezina goes to the Finnish Fence, Tomi Niemenen. This is Tomi’s second Vezina in two years to add to his Calder trophy in 2022. Congratulations on a great season Tomi!
2024 Rocket Richard Trophy
This year’s Rocket Richard Trophy winner, his second in two seasons, is Chris Deware from Ireland. Chris had 37 goals in 18 games for an average of over 2 goals/game. Chris was a big reason for Ireland’s success this year. Chris went down with a knee injury early in game 1 of the playoffs and the Irish are hoping that he heals fast and brings his scoring touch back to their playoff bid.
2024 Norris Trophy
This year’s Norris Trophy goes to PCOHL veteran Sal Guerra. This is Sal’s fourth Norris Trophy (2002, 2003, 2004, 2017) in his 23rd year in the league. Anyone who’s played with Sal knows the comfort of playing in front of Italy’s Department of Defence. Congratulations Sal!
2024 Selke Trophy Winner
The Selke Trophy goes to the most improved player of the year. That’s usually a newer player who has big growth year, but this year’s recipient was the 1997 Art Ross Trophy Winner (most points in the regular season) before taking a 15 year hiatus and re-joining last year. Averaging over a point a game this season, Rick Cecchetto had a renaissance year (remember Mario Lemieux’s comeback?). Congratulations on a great year Rick!
2024 Calder Trophy
Last but not least, the Rookie of the Year trophy goes to fill-in backstop Tony Cioffi. This was a particularly close battle with Italy’s rookie John Levac having a phenomenal year with 30 points and Scotland’s Steve Boyle instantly becoming a vital part of that team. However, the Slovenian season looked doomed after long-time backstop Scotty McCallum went down with a serious knee injury. Cioffi took over the goalie responsibilities for Slovenia and is a big reason for their second-place finish. Congratulations Tony on a great year!
