Week 20 Recap (January 31 games)
Early Game – Slovenia vs Italy
Italy goes into this final game of the fourth round trying to build on their win last week while Slovenia wants to avoid losing two in a row.
Speedy John Levac beats Arty Senkowski for the lone goal of the first period, both tendies looking sharp.
Levac’s goal stands as the only one in 26 minutes and then – WHAM – FOUR GOALS IN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES. Classic PCOHL am I right?
Slovenian MVP Stephen Davis starts the frenzy with a pair of goals 21 seconds apart to put Slovenia up 2-1. But Italy answers less than a minute later with goals from Flumerfelt and Platt to put Italy back in the lead 3-2.
After another five minutes of goaltender heroics, ANOTHER goal burst, this time all Team Italia with three goals in three minutes — two from Levac and a single from Flumerfelt. Davis gets his hat-trick before the period ends Italy 6, Slovenia 3.
D-man Dave Skingley scores for the Romans seven minutes into the third but Davis gets his fourth with six minutes to go. Italy 7, Slovenia 4. But Slovenia seemed to run out of gas. Flumerfelt would add two more to make it 9-4 and that’s how this one ended. Italy protecting a two-game winning streak while Slovenia licks its wounds with a second straight loss.
Italy’s player of the game goes to veteran workhorse Paul Harty while Stephen Davis with all four goals takes the Honours for Slovenia.
Late Game – Scotland vs Portugal
With first place Ireland resting this week, 2nd place Scotland hopes to make ground while Portugal looks to repeat its thrashing of the kilts from last round.
John Annan leads things off with a goal for Portugal 10 minutes into the first period but the Scottish manage three unanswered goals before the period ends – two by Peter McKay and one by Dave Vincelli.
Portugal scores first again in the second period, this time veteran D-Man Jay Cummings getting the job done, but again the Scots answer with two goals by sub Mike Kidd (good to see you back Mike) and sharp-shooting D-man Brad Stoll. 5-2 for the kilts after two periods.
Scottish tendie Henderson closes the door at this point, turning away all Portuguese tries while Brad Stoll adds a second and Vincelli gets a hat-trick. Final score: Scotland 8, Portugal 2.
Two D-men take the Player of the Game honours — Agostino Falcone for the haggis-eaters and Jay Cummings for the Lisbonites.
