Week 24 Recap
Ok 2 blow out games last week as we are closing out our regular season.
Early game was a big one between our top 2 teams the Islanders and the Flyers. All Islanders in the opening period as they score 4 unanswered goals. Both squads settle down in the the 2nd frame as they went scoreless. Islanders score 3 more times early in the 3rd taking a 7-0 lead. Flyers get 3 quick goals back only to see the Islanders get one more for a huge victory of 8-3. Islanders went 0-2 on the PP and Flyers were 0-1. Islander got 2 goals each from McKean, Barkin, and Tygesen and singles from Connell and Riddell. Flyers get 2 goals from Robb and a single from May. McKean had a 6 point night and breaks the single season scoring record of 58 points, looking to get 2 more goals this week to tie the single goal record of 36, well done Robert. Players of the Game went to Islanders #23 Jeffery Barkin and Flyers #2 Jimmy Martin.
Late game between the Oilers and the Habs. Not a good sign when Oilers Brideau talks to Habs Rukavina during the warm up and says we HAVE to win today or he will miss a few playoff games. Oh no. Oilers open the game with a 2-1 lead after one period. Oilers get 3 more goals in the 2nd for a 5-1 lead after 2. Oilers get 3 more in the final frame as the Habs manage only a single goal for a final 8-2 Oiler victory. Oilers go 1-3 on the PP and Habs go 0-0. Oilers get 2 goals each from Burke, Brideau and Maguire and singles from Rundle and Leenaars. Habs get goals from Sharp and Randa. Congrats to Patrick Sharp as he finishes the season with 21 points, better than a point a game and as well was awarded Player of the Game. Oilers honor back stop Frank Rispoli for this match.
So what have we confirmed with one more week to go. Oilers victory secured the 3rd seed for the playoffs and confirmed the Bruins as the 4th seed. Habs locked the 5th seed back in October haha. Flyers and Islanders sit with identical 12-6-1 records and will need to play out this weeks games to see who will finish as the 1st seed and 2nd seed. Flyers hold a 3-2 edge head to head so if both teams win, tie or lose this week Flyers get the #1 seed. Oilers and Bruins will play spoilers. Rob McKean hits the 59 point mark and breaks a 15 year record for single season scoring and with 34 goals needs 2 to tie and 3 to take the single goal scoring record. Habs and Barry Ervin enter the league record books with most goals against, 138. Record was with Gord Ide back in 2008 as a Nordique at 134. The battle for the Vezina just got interesting as our oldest goalie Bobby Ide is chasing our youngest goalie Scott McCallum. Scottie has a 4 goals against lead on Bobby but both still have one more game to play, hmmmmm. Habs Joe Peacock took 12 minutes in penalties and jumped out of no where as our league leader with 16 minutes this season. Joe is looking to Flyers Diluzio with 14, Islanders Sparrow with 12 or Bruins Wright with 12 to spend some time with Brenda this week to dethrone him. What no Tony Thomas in that category???
This weeks games on Friday, March 11 are as follows. 9:15 pm Oilers will face off against the Flyers and at 10:30 Bruins will battle the Islanders. Montreal is off site for a team building motivational land training session to prepare for the playoffs, they will be at the ballet eating poutine and practicing their dives on the ice.
See you all on the ice boys and remember we are a beer league, enjoy.
